What is an Ideal Church of Scientology – an “Ideal Org”?

New Churches of Scientology are now coming up left, right and centre, with new and rather impressive buildings being planned and built in cities around the world.  An example of this is the new Church of Scientology in Pasadena, California.

Scientologists call these buildings “Ideal Orgs” or Ideal Scientology Organizations.   What does this mean – an “Ideal Org? The origin of this term is from an essay, formally adopted as Church Policy, which L. Ron Hubbard wrote called “The Ideal Org” (the text of which anyone can read from the Scientology Management Series volumes which are available in many libraries around the world, as well as in any church of Scientology) In this policy letter, Mr. Hubard outlines all of the functions and actions any Church of Scientology should be doing, and also the responsibility that Church would be taking for its general area.   He calls it the “Ideal” organization, as it represents an ideal to which any Scientology organization can compare itself to, and one to which any organization can then look and see in what areas they are measuring up well, and where they need to improve.

These Churches of Scientology (like the Founding Church of Scientology of Washington, D.C. pictured above) have many features that enable them to take on such embracive responsibility.

Some of the points Mr. Hubbard enumerates in his The Ideal Org essay are as follows:

“It would have enough space to train, process and administrate without crowding.” – LRH

One common feature that you’ll find in this new breed of Scientology organizations is quite a bit more space.   As an example, the new Church of Scientology of Washington, D.C. sits at roughly 49,000 square feet, replacing and augmenting the earlier 17,000 sq-ft Church that D.C. Scientologists had frankly grown out of.   You can see the spacious nature of other new Scientology churches in these photos of the churches in Quebec, Bruxelles, and Mexico City.

Mr. Hubbard then goes along to define all of the other major features one would expect to find in an Ideal Church of Scientology, down to how the Church should be contacting its parishioners, the extreme competence with which new counsellors would be trained by the Church, the sharpness of the staff in doing their jobs, and the excellent results the organization would be achieving.  He says:

“Such an ideal org would be built by taking what one has and step-by-step building and smoothing; grooving in and handling each of its functions, with each of its divisions doing more and more of its full job better and better.” – LRH

This is why these new ideal buildings are such a crucial step to making a Scientology Church that takes on the full breadth of its full responsibilities for its community.  Previously, in churches that were too small to fit all of the functions of a full Church of Scientology, the actions the church was meant to do were not able to come to fruition.  But with this new breed of churches – built with expansive chapels, panels to introduce new people to the subject of Scientology, seminar rooms and facilities to reach out into the community with anti-drug education, human rights programs, and the like – now these churches can really start to expand into the pivotal role to help their community that their staffs and parishioners have always striven for.

  1. I saw that, on New Zealand. I’m actually looking forward to some of these over here in the U.S., as the last opening of an Ideal Church of Scientology I was able to go to was in Buffalo, back in 2003 — one that Mr. David Miscavige spoke at. That was one of the first ones.

  2. The Church has certainly been buying up a bunch of property at the moment. Do we know what has prompted this? I know membership of the church isn’t fantastic – is it a “speculate to accumulate” strategy?

  3. I was looking for a site that would explain the new beautiful buildings this is great! I am really impressed with the pictures and explanations.

  4. Marie — you’re welcome. There are a ton more new Ideal churches of Scientology where this came from, as well. If I can get pictures of them, I’ll post about them too!

    1. Sorry – I just saw your post. Yes, there’s indeed a new Ideal Org for DC! Hope you’ve seen it. If not, come on by — pics I’ve taken of it are here:

  5. I visited the London church three weeks ago and it is spectacular. We can expect a ton of new comers when these churches open in the US. Can’t wait for news about what’s happening in Oregon.

  6. Scientology saved my life
    Until I joined I was a failure
Church gatherings showed me that I had merely been
Killing time, waiting for meaning to show up.
My spirit is now free to explore the wonder of the universe
    Yours can be too.
    Don’t delay!
Ideal Org is the answer to your worries about your greater purpose
Can you open your heart to the idea?
Keep faith, my friends; salvation is at hand.

  7. I’ve been to two Ideal org’s San Francisco, and San Jose; thier layout’s are totally awesome, very functional.

  8. Please let me know how can I help. The church at Argentina is not doing a very good job… thats why I dont join here, but I would love to donate to help the Church in the rest of the world

    1. ‘Hello, I am in Argentina, sabes las ultimas novedades de lo que esta pasando con scientology en argentina? comunicate conmigo para informarte de lo que esta sucediendo con la organizacion ideal en argentina.bea

  9. I was lost, had several negative things happen in my life and was ill for sometime. Scientology came along and showed me that I didn’t have to be a victim, I didn’t have to succumb to all of the negative things and be the effect of them.
I am now cause over everything in my life and I am happy, I am 100 times more successful and aware of how to handle life challenges as well as having more understanding of my fellow man and empathy for them.

This is what Scientology teaches us, to love each other, respect each other, help each other, understand and not judge each other, doesn’t it make you wonder why we are not all Scientologists?

There has been an ideal org building purchased for my city of Cambridge, ON Canada and I can’t wait to see it open, that will be a very happy day in my life indeed. If you want to change the world, become a Scientologist, we make it a better place every day!
